Common Fibreglass issues

Osmosis Blistering

Common in older shells, osmosis blistering is an ingression of water in between the fibreglass layers. This is caused by a chemical reaction between the surface material and the water.

Gelcoat Wearing

Gelcoat wearing is very common in older pool from general use and wear. The thickness of the gel coat eventually wears through to the fibreglass layers, turning the once colourful surface a grey/brown colour.

Cracks / Splits

Caused by ground movement, cracks can affect the surface gel coat only, or all the way through the gel coat and fibreglass layer. Cracks are usually found in the strongest parts of the pool such as the corners and steps.

Wall / Floor Movement

Older shells are more susceptible to movement from ground erosion over time. This can cause the walls to move inwards, which in return causes the floor to warp and push upwards, creating a bubble on the surface.

Blackspots

A blackspot is caused by a breakdown in the gel coat surface. This generally occurs through wear and tear, but can sometimes be a result of manufacturing faults. The gel coat becomes porous, causing mould to penetrate the surface and leave large black stain marks.

Rust

We all know salt and metal don’t mix well. As a result, ferrous materials can cause rust to penetrate the gel coat and leave permanent stains. These stains can burn the surface of your pool and are almost impossible to remove without renovating the surface.
