Common Concrete issues

Concrete pools are subject to issues as they age, below are some of the most common issues, which are applicable to painted, quartz, marbled and tiled concrete shell’s.

Surface Lifting

Common in marble/quartz pools is a condition where water penetrates the surface layers and causes it to lift from the concrete shell. In such cases, each area has to be manually removed and re-levelled.

Surface Wearing

After prolonged exposure to chemicals and UV, the surface of a concrete pool will begin to break down and cause staining that is near impossible to remove.

Cracks / Splits

Caused by movement, cracks can be surface/hairline, or deep into the concrete. Converting your concrete pool to a fibreglass shell will ensure maximum flexibility which will help reduce cracks transferring through the surface.

Blackspot

Black spot- This is caused by a breakdown in the gel coat surface, generally through wear and tare but sometime through manufacturing faults, the gel coat becomes porous causing mould to penetrate the surface and stains the surrounding surface.

Wall / Floor Movement

Wall and/or floor movement- Older shells are more susceptible to movement from ground erosion overtime, this can cause the walls to sometimes move inwards, which in return causes the floor to warp and push upwards, causing a ‘bubble’ .

Rust

we all know salt and metal don’t mix to well, as a result ferrous materials can cause rust to penetrate the surface and cause permanent stains. These stains can burn the surface and almost are impossible to remove without renovating the surface.
